  Personality

I would describe myself as technical, passionate and gracious. I always strive to give others the benefit of the doubt and practice a longsuffering attitude. Many tell me I am easy to work with and I feel that I am usually well liked. With respect to work, one of my friends has described me as a technical Swiss Army Knife. I think this is an interesting and adequate description. I am a bit of a tech-multi-tool and enjoy a diversity of technologies. I describe myself as a, "Jack of all trades, master of some." This is often what is referred to as a polymath (see definition). As an analytical-creative, with a unique perspective on the world, I am fortunate to have numerous skills to offer and I love being able to contribute. I am passionate about the web and passionate about people.

polymath (Greek: πολυμαθής, polymathēs, "having learned much") is a person whose expertise spans a significant number of different subject areas; such a person is known to draw on complex bodies of knowledge to solve specific problems.

Over the years, I have demonstrated one thing consistently, the ability to teach myself new concepts. Thus, by definition, I am also an autodidact (see definition).  I enjoy the challenge and adventure of learning and believe I can learn anything if given adequate context and a chance to layer the knowledge.

autodidact (Greek: αυτοδίδακτος, autodidaktos self-taught, from aut- + didaktos taught, from didaskein to teach) is a person who is self-taught or having the ability to teach themselves.

I never am at a point where I think I have arrived in my knowledge. I am constantly pushing myself to learn and advance. I'm am agreesive in my pursuit of life-long learning.

  Family

Dan & BarbI will have been married to the love of my life, Barbara, for 25 years as of June 2021. I definitely married up! Barb and I had many friends in common, but had never met until our 20s. I went to Olathe North High School and she went to the rival school, Olathe South. We met at her father's book store and were friends for two years before we began dating. Months thereafter, much to our parents dismay, we eloped! We are very blessed to have three children; Daniel, Nathan and Ashlyn, Ashlyn is a young artist, she and her brother Nathan are quite the gamers. Their older brother, Daniel, is a gifted strategist and is constantly creating board games. These three never cease to amaze with their abilities and creativity.

  Interest

ChessMany of my primary interest and passions are closely related to my work. I enjoy teaching, technology, programming and media (graphics, photography, audio and video). But you also may find me tinkering with technical gadgets like my Intel NUC web server or programming for fun, playing guitar, and following football. I am a huge Chiefs fan, as well as a fan and collector of IRONMAN things. So you can find me on Twitter as @KCIRONFAN which is of course a slight merger of the two interest.

I also have an outdoor side and enjoy spending time at the range. I am a member of the USPSA (United States Practical Shooting Association) and enjoy marksmanship and competitive shooting. When I get the chance, I also enjoy going hiking (see my visual hiking log  and nature photos). I really love camp cooking and survival skills.

Lastly, I am also involved in various studies related to the scholar, Dr. Francis Schaeffer, so I am regularly reading both his works and researching various materials. These studies prompted the founding of the research service called Francis Schaeffer Studies. As you might expect, I am quite busy, but I'm doing all the things I truly love.

  A Diverse Technologist

I can site numerous instances from my work history where I have been able to succeed by learning a diverse set of technical skills. In technical school, I took classes, but within a year I was asked to teach. When I worked in banking, I cross-trained and learned every check item processing position. As a web programmer, I wanted to know how it all worked, from front-end to back-end. Later as an analyst, I loved the diversity of working across multiple teams and with many types of specialist. If you are looking for a generalist, I am most definitely your man. If you are looking for a particular specialist who will be mindful of the big picture do not rule me out. I am adaptive and a hungry learner.

I'm a Diverse Technologist, with Experience as an Analyst, Programmer, Designer & Technical Instructor.

  My Career

I started my career in banking and was noticed for my skills with Excel and was eventually asked to teach "Excel for Banking." Thereafter, I was hired as a technical instructor at the school I was attending. During my early career as a technical instructor, I was exposed to numerous technologies by working side-by-side with other teachers. I had been interested in the web as a hobby since the late 90s and took the opportunity to pick up various web development languages as well as web design and other skills directly from other instructors. For the next 10 years or so, I worked as a Full-Stack PHP Developer, with a short stint as a VBA Application Developer (MS Excel Macro Development). For two years thereafter, I worked for the first time as a Business Systems Analyst. In the summer of 2016, I accepted a teaching role as a part-time technical instructor at Johnson County Community College. Here, I have an opportunity to both share my skills and further enhance them. I have continued to work in both development and Business Analyst roles and currently am a Business Analyst at MBB Ad Agency, and freelance a bit here and there. I love what I do and enjoy the challenge. I am excited to see where the life will takes me, and how I can further grow in my skills and teach others.

  Teaching

Technical Instructor

I really have a deep love for teaching. There is something about watching the "lights come on" in people's minds. Their faces light up, they get excited about what they are learning and you can feel the electricity when they engage. I got my start as an instructor while working in banking. After being noticed for my skills with Excel, I was asked to teach. A short time later, I was asked to become a technical instructor at the school I was attending. While I was there, I learned to program and began my career in web development. I believe teaching and instruction are an important necessity in one's technical career, especially if you do any work as an analyst. Today, I teach part-time as a technical instuctor at Johnson County Community College where I try to pass on my years of knowledge to hungry minds.

Training is an essential part of work. People need patient and engaging mentors. This is what I bring to the table.
